This book contains the work of Esther Kroon, a Dutch photographer who died 20 years ago at the age of 25, murdered in Antigua, Guatemala, to which she had travelled to start her new photographic project.

The photographs published belong to the archives of the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, and consist of the photos taken by Esther in Barcelona and Amsterdam between 1988 and 1990. All in black and white, the images show children in the street, posing and shown close up, with a low viewpoint and with the use of a flash, so that their gaze has been completely seized in the portrait while the surrounding landscape remains in the background. The photographs in Barcelona are of small gypsy children, while in Amsterdam Esther photographed working-class children.

There are also some self-portraits in the last part of the book, taken together with her friend and colleague, Hatta Fokker.
